Narrative
Narrate the events that took place both
at Notun Gram and Boral villages while shooting the film ‘Goopy Gyne and Bagha Byne’.
Goopy and Bagha and a Tiger Satyajith
Ray was in need of a trained in order to shoot his film ‘ Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne’. After long searches, he managed to get one from the famous
Bharat Circus company. Ray found a
suitable bamboo grove in Notun Gram for shooting the scenes. As arranged the ringmaster of the circus
company Mr. Thorat reached the shooting location with two tigers in a lorry. Mr.
Thorat and his men took a thin but strong steel wire and tied one end of it
to an iron rode fixed to the ground. They tied the other end to the
tiger-skin collar the tiger was already wearing around its neck. Ray and his
crew set the camera and everything ready to take the shots, and Mr. Thorat
opened the tiger’s cage. But contrary to their expectations, the tiger
misbehaved. Instead of walking sedately, it started prancing and charged at
the audience pulling its trainer Mr. Thorat. But after a short while, the
tiger calmed down and they managed to take the required shots. After two days
when they reached back to Calcutta and checked the shots, they realized that
the camera had failed to work properly. All the shorts were too dark. They
had to take all the shots over again. Ray found a suitable bamboo grove in Boral village and made all arrangements for the second attempt. Mr. Thorat and his men reached the location with the tiger. There were about 150 villagers gathered behind the camera to watch shooting. They were instructed to stay away. But nobody listened to the instruction. When Mr. Thorat opened the tiger’s Cage, it sprang out and charged violently at the villagers. All of them vanished as if magic. The
tiger soon calmed down and behaved like an obedient child. They took all the
required shots successfully. This time the camera also behaved well, which
they realized when they checked the shots.

Write-up
1. Ray begins his article with
the topic sentence, ‘No one can beat Hollywood when it comes to making films
with animals in them’. Prepare a write-up about the animal actors in films
based on your reading of ‘Project Tiger’.
Animal Actors are Famous Stars Ray says that no one can beat Hollywood in making films with
animals. We can substantiate his arguments by citing examples from his own
personal experiences. He remembers certain films he watched in his childhood
in which the main characters were dogs. He says that there was an Alsatian
dog named Rin-tin-tin whose acting was more impressive than a human actor’s.
He also remembers another collie dog called Lassie. The directors could make
Lassie play whatever role in a film. These animal actors were famous stars
and had human stand-ins. In Hollywood, the animal actors are treated very
reverently. The money they earn is not less than what a real film star gets. Every
animal in a Hollywood film is well-trained. It is not difficult to train a
horse or a dog. But in
Hollywood, what we think impossible has
been made possible - making trained ravens act in films – as in the film
‘Birds’ by Alfred Hitchcock. Though trained animals are not so easily available, in Indian
film industry also some films have been made with elephants, horses and
tigers. Ray himself made the film ‘Pather Panchali’ using the trained dog
Bhulo. Ray says that it is possible to get good performances out of the
animal actors, if the directors are patient enough. In short, some animal
actors are, no doubt, famous stars!

2. Are films just a means of entertainment? Do
you think films are instructional in nature? What are the functions of films?
Based on your reading of the lessons My
Sister's Shoe and Project
Tiger, prepare a write-up on the role of films in
our society.
Cinema
– A Reflector of the Society
Since the origination of cinema, it has become a powerful medium
for exchanges of culture, education, entertainment and propaganda in
connection with human societal life. Just like the people are varied in their
passions and priorities, their approach to cinema is also different from one
another. For some people cinema is only a medium of entertainment, and for
some others it is a reflection of their own life. The influence and impact of cinema on a person’s life are tremendous. So, we should have the ability to distinguish between fact and fiction. Films as an entertainment medium, most often project things in an exaggerated way. It is the viewers’ duty to realize that facts are more often far away from the dazzling presentations of things on the silver screen. While films on scientific and historical facts and documentaries on nature and environment provide us with information and knowledge, there are certain films that endanger our generation with all sorts of negativism – vulgarities, violence, terror and horror. In a sense, all films are instructional, and they can teach us good and bad
alike. We, the viewers, should be the followers of good and should never be
the bearers of everything. The Indian legendary filmmaker Satyajith Ray’s
memoir ‘Project Tiger’ and the Iranian director Majid Majidi’s screen play
‘My Sister’s Shoes’ tell us not only some noble stories but also convince us
the amount of hard work behind a film. Nowadays, computers and the internet may have decreased the efforts
of film making and increased the publicity and profitability of films, but at
the same time acts of piracy have also increased; that must be discouraged. |
Diary Entry
Satyajith Ray was very disappointed when he realized that his first shooting attempt went in vain. He expressed his feelings in his diary. Prepare the likely diary entry.

March 2021, Thursday 11:oopm What
a bad luck! All our efforts went in vain. I had taken great pains to get a
trained tiger and to shoot the scenes. When the tiger misbehaved we thought
we would fail in our attempts. But the
animal behaved well soon. Then, who thought the camera would cheat me!
Anyway, all the scenes I’ve to shoot again. I’ll speak to Mr. Thorat. I hope
he will cooperate. I have to look for a new location. A nearer place will be
better. No need to be disappointed in failures. Hard work will bring success.
I’ll work till I succeed. |

Character Sketch of Mr. Thorat
Mr.
Thorat Mr. Thorat was the ringmaster of the Bharat Circus.
He played a major role in realising Ray’s film Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne,
and Ray gratefully remembered him in
Ray’s memoir ‘Project Tiger. He was a
South Indian, but looked like a Nepali. He was very well-built and around
forty years of age. He was in charge of the risky tasks of training and
keeping wild animals in the circus company. He had to face many tiger
attacks, and he had a scar on his forearm which had been caused by a
tiger. He was a man with enough practical wisdom. He
brought two tigers instead of one to the shooting location. His idea was that if one tiger did not
behave well, the other one could be used. He seemed not to be confident enough about setting
his tigers free on their own at the shooting location. But he himself
suggested a solution. A thin but strong iron wire could be fixed around the
neck of the tiger and it would not be visible to the camera. He was seen very much frightened and
helpless at the unexpected behaviour of the ferocious tiger. He failed to
control the animal when it turned violent.
But Mr. Thorat was hard working and adventurous and a man of high regard
for others. When the first shooting attempt failed, he readily agreed to take
the risk of bringing the tigers for the second time. He was a very cooperative person, and
without his cooperation Ray’s film ‘Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne’ would not have
been realized.

News Report

the tiger at the shooting location.
Tiger Goes
Violent at Shooting Location 18 March 2021, Thursday, Staff Reporter,
Kolkata: The shooting
of the long- awaited film Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne by the legendary
filmmaker Satyajith Ray began yesterday at Notun Gram. In the film, there is
a scene in which heroes of the film Goopy and Byne meet a tiger in a forest.
To get it filmed, a trained tiger from the Bharat Circus was brought to the
shooting location. When the trainer opened its cage, the ferocious animal
suddenly turned violent and charged at the villagers. The frightened crowd ran for their life and
some of them fell down and got injured.
Fortunately none of them injured seriously.
The tiger’s trainer Mr. Thorat could not bring it under control even though he made many strenuous attempts. After a while, the tiger became calm and Mr.Ray and his crew managed to take the required shots successfully.
